Delayed-Start Study Design for Balloon Dilation of the Eustachian Tube: Alternative for a Randomized Controlled Trial
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Eustachian tube (ET) is a narrow canal that courses from the middle ear cavity to the nasopharynx, which opens to provide ventilation to the middle ear and to equalize middle ear and ambient pressures (1). In this article, we refer by “Eustachian tube dysfunction” only to obstructive ET dysfunction, i.e., failure to open and ventilate the middle ear, as opposed to patulous ET dysfunction, in which there is failure of ET closure. ET dysfunction is a common medical problem with an estimated incidence of 1% in the adult population and produces symptoms of aural fullness, otalgia, tinnitus, and hearing loss, often exacerbated or precipitated by atmospheric pressure changes (2, 3). Upper airway inflammation (including allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis) commonly precipitate (episodes of) obstructive ET dysfunction (1). Long-lasting ET dysfunction may also result in middle ear conditions such as serous otitis media, tympanic membrane (TM) retractions, and cholesteatoma (4).

Introduction: Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction is a common clinical entity but its treatment is still challenging to Otorhinolaryngologists. This study is done to know the effectiveness of transnasal endoscopic balloon dilatation of eustachian tube for treatment of chronic eustachian tube dysfunction. Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective observational study conducted between May 2...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The surgical management options for eustachian tube dysfunction have historically been limited. The goal of the current study was to evaluate the technical considerations, learning curve, and potential barriers for balloon dilation of the eustachian tube (BDET) as an alternative treatment modality. STUDY DESIGN Prospective preclinical trial of BDET in a cadaver model. ...
متن کاملEustachian Tube Dilation via a Transtympanic Approach in 6 Cadaver Heads: A Feasibility Study.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of endoscopic transtympanic balloon dilation of the cartilaginous eustachian tube. To accomplish this, transtympanic balloon dilation of the cartilaginous eustachian tube was performed on 11 eustachian tubes (6 cadaver heads). The balloon catheter was introduced and passed through the protympanic orifice of the eustachian tube transtympanic...

OBJECTIVE Balloon dilation is a new entity in the therapeutic approach of Eustachian tube dysfunction. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the success of balloon dilation of the tuba auditiva in reducing symptoms in adult patients with Eustachian tube dysfunction. DATA SOURCES Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. REVIEW METHODS The systematic literature search was conducted in...
